Cardiology
Some people might still remember the doctor who made house calls
and who saw to the health and well-being of an entire town, old and
young, regardless of the illness. This is mostly a small town
experience, but even people in the larger urban areas usually just saw
one doctor for everything. But these days, a general practitioner or
family practitioner is becoming more and more rare. In their place are
specialists. Specialists focus on just one part of the body or area,
or one segment of internal medicine. Doctors who focus on the heart
and the blood vessels are cardiologists, and their field is known as
cardiology. Cardiology is an always growing and expanding field
because there are regularly breakthroughs in that area of medicine.
This area of study is concerned with prolonging the health of the heart and
the blood vessels, curing diseases that affect the heart and the blood
vessels, and promoting practices that will encourage the health of the
heart and blood vessels. Cardiologists should not be confused with
cardiac surgeons, who focus on operating on that area of the body.
Cardiac surgeons have a place within cardiology, but cardiology is
more focused on health and treatment than surgery.
There are many different disorders that can affect the coronary
circulation, the muscle of the heart, the outer lining of the heart,
the heart valves, and the electrical system of the heart.
