EKG Rhythm Strips

EKG Rhythm Strips

An EKG is an electrocardiogram machine. An electrocardiogram comes from three root words. Electro because it measures the electrical currents in your heart. Cardio is the Greek for heart. And gram mean to draw. So it is literally a machine used to draw the electrical currents of your heart. Electrodes are attached to your chest and pulse point, and then your heart is monitored for any abnormalities. Abnormalities can indicate either a serious heart condition or disease, or it could indicate an oncoming heart attack. Clearly, EKGs are very useful in diagnosing heart problems.

EKG rhythm strips are the readings that are printed out of the heart’s rhythms. Because it is so complicated and difficult to read, hospitals require specialized classes, and nurses and doctors can become EKG specialists and become experts at reading rhythm strips. To the average person, these strips might be completely impossible to read, but the rhythm strips give a good picture of exactly what your heart is doing at that moment.

If you are admitted to the hospital with chest pains or have different symptoms for health problems, an EKG is the most common thing to get. Once the doctor or specialist has read your EKG, they can decide which course of treatment is the best for you. Of if it’s something that the EKG simply can’t read, thus directing them to a different place for the possible problem and diagnosis. That is why the rhythm strips are so helpful and necessary for anybody with cardiovascular problems.
