How to Use an AED

Remember that this short article is not meant to be used in place of actual automatic external defibrillator training. If you own an automatic external defibrillator or plan to be in the situation to use such a device, you should contact the American Heart Association and find an AED training course in your area. But if you need some quick information, then you can find it here. It is very simple to use an AED, especially if you have the proper training.

The first step in knowing how to use an AED is knowing when to call for help. Before you start using the AED, dial 9-1-1. It is best for everybody if you begin by calling for emergency medical responders. Second, check the heart and airways. If the victim is breathing, then you know he or she has a pulse. If the victim is not breathing, he or she will not have a pulse. You need to immediately clear the airways and begin CPR operations immediately. This is to stimulate breathing. The CPR needs to be uninterrupted. That is absolutely critical. If you need to find the AED, you need to either let somebody else take over the CPR, or have them find the AED. After you have located the automatic external defibrillator, you need to attach it to the patient’s chest. The AED should include a diagram so you know exactly where to place the pads. Even after the AED is attached, the CPR should not be interrupted. Call clear and make sure nobody is touching the body when you charge and use the defibrillator.
